Old products were reliable, the new one not so much

I hear this line pretty frequently. But the data do not support this statement. One of the possible explanations of the belief that older products were more reliable is selection bias.

Products have a variable lifespan. Hence, when we use a century-old item, the item does not break easily, because it was stress-tested for a century and the weaklings were weaned a long time ago. On the other end, when we use a new item, there is a good chance that it won't survive long because it wasn't stress-tested and weaned for a century like the old products that survived to these days.

Another factor is the variable variance of durability. When the distinct count of the manufacturers that produce the product is high and when the manufacturers are independent of each (e.g.: they use only local resources), we may expect high variance in the durability of the products. On the other end, if there is just a few manufacturers or if they all use the same components or design, we may expect low variance in the durability of the products. Hence, some of the products that were produced during the high variance period are likely going to have outstanding durability (just like it is likely that some of them had really terribly low durability). The "issue" with the new products is, that we currently live in a fairly globalized world and many technologies that we use daily were commoditized (standardized and made widely available). Hence, many new items that we use daily have a fairly predictable lifespan. A lifespan, which does not span centuries (because that would be overkill). Consequently, we may sometimes find "indestructible" items that were created when the technology was new. But keep in mind that just like "indestructible" items were produced, there were also "rubbish" items, which were quickly thrown out.

Overall, the data suggest that the quality of manufacturing keeps improving over time. But thanks to selection bias and variable variance, the reverse appears to hold for the item-user.

Addendum: We could model it analytically. For simplicity, assume that probability of a product failure follows log-normal distribution (I picked this distribution because it fulfills three basic properties: it does not allow negative values, it has a long tail and people are familiar with it).

Selection bias can be then illustrated as a difference between probability that a new product fails in the next 10 years vs. a probability that a 100 years old product fails in the next 10 years. The first probability is going to be large, because log-normal distribution is "fat" at the beginning. But once we get to the tail, the derivative of the distribution is going to be close to 0. In other words, if a product survives 100 years, it is actually more likely that it will fail after 10 years than during the next 10 year period.

The variable variance can be illustrated with an observation that whenever an engineer doesn't know how to accurately estimate something, he/she prefers to overestimate the parameters and build the thing robustly. However, sometimes the initial design has a flaw, which reduces the lifespan of the product (hence, the peak is wide - the product can last long but also fail quickly). The next phase is fixing these flaws. But everything else is left as before (the fat from the beginning is removed but the fat tail is preserved - this is the period from which we observe many "eternal" products). Over the time, the product is price optimized (the fat tail is removed - the products have a predictable lifespan without extremes and they all look like garbage in comparison to the eternal products of the past).

Braess's Paradox

Braess's paradox states that when we add a new path into a network, it may decrease the total flow through the network.

The paradox can be nicely illustrated on a spring. However, beware that Nature's illustration of the spring experiment is flown:

The lengths of the springs should be different when we cut the rope (while the lengths of the remaining ropes should remain unchanged). The corrected illustration:

On Wikipedia, you can read that you can also observe it in electrical networks "at low temperatures using a scanning gate microscopy":

But you don't need a fancy technology to observe the paradox in electrical circuits. Nature's article actually got close to a "simple circuit":

But it requires a source of constant current. A simpler schema, which utilizes a source of constant voltage, is:

We just need 2 light bulbs, 2 resistors, a 9V battery (or any other source of constant voltage) and an ampermeter to measure the change of the current. Optionally, we may include a button or switch. But a piece of wire is enough.

How does it work? Incandescent bulbs have an interesting property: when they are cold, they work almost like a short-circuit. Only once they heat up, their resistance increases to the nominal value (the diagram is for a 60W light-bulb):

The nominal resistance of the light bulb in our schema is 5V/(0.45W/5V)=56Ω. When the button is open, the nominal current thru a single light bulb is 9V/(56Ω+68Ω)=0.073A. But once we close the button, more current goes thru the light bulbs than thru the resistors, because the light bulbs have nominal resistance of 56Ω while the resistors have 68Ω. But the increased current thru the light bulbs heats up the filaments, the light bulb resistance increases and the total current thru the network decreases.

Experimental currents thru the whole network for different resistors:
resistance [Ω]   open [mA]   close [mA]
32 160 160.5
46 140 140
68 125 124
100 112 113
The paradox was observed only for one value of the resistors' resistance (68Ω). The optimal resistance for maximization of the paradox effect is somewhere around 62Ω. If you have a tandem potentiometer that can withstand ~1 Watt (e.g.: an old wire potentiometer), I would be happy to hear what is the actual optimal value and the size of the effect.

Applications: A teaser on an open-day/science-fair in a school. You ask visitors to guess when the circuit is going to consume more energy:
  1. When the button is visibly closed and the light bulbs are shining brightly?
  2. Or when the button is visibly open and the light bulbs are just dim?
The paradoxical answer is that the circuit consumes more energy when the light bulbs are dim.

To puzzle the visitors even more, you may stress that the circuit contains only passive components and that the trick is not in the power supply.

The impression of machine learning in R

One professor once said, that whenever a student asks him a question, he immediately knows whether the student studies economy, statistics or computer science. If a student asks him what is the return of investment, the student studies economy. If a student asks him what is the sample size, the student studies statistics. And if a student asks him for an edge scenario, the student is a computer scientist.
From the current state of algorithms in R it is evident that many authors are statisticians but not programmers. On the good side, whenever I need an implementation of some obscure statistical algorithm, I know that either I get it in R or I am out of luck. However, package authors in R frequently forget to check for common edge scenarios like division by zero.

I good burn in the past so many times that I have assembled a table with the prior believe that the implementation is not going to blow up when I throw my dirty data at it:
  1. Core R functions like c(): 100%
  2. Core library functions like chisq.test(): 98%
  3. A function in a library implementing a single algorithm: 70%
  4. A function in a library implementing many algorithms: 40%

The optimal length of text

When I was working with text I noticed that the optimal length of text is somewhere around 100 characters.

The estimate is based on following measures:
  • Twitter: 140 charactes
  • Performance of bank tellers based on their notes about the clients: 100-150 characters
  • Dating websites: 97 characters

Proč analytici jsou tak často horlezci?

  5. Lidi se dají rozdělit do dvou skupin - někteří preferují optimalizovat správnost odpovědi, jiní rychlost. Analytici obvykle inklinují k přesnosti a horolezectví je nejdřív o optimalizaci výběru cesty a až později o akčnosti. Naproti tomu squash, ten je nejdřívo akčnosti a až později o strategii. Proto obchodníci spíše preferují běh a squash.

    Archetypes in relationship

There are two archetypes in a relationship. One is a boss-and-his-secretary and the second archetype is craftsman-and-his-saleswoman. Both these archetypes are based on a difference between an average man and woman. Men like to think in big and women prefer to think in small. For an illustration ask students at an elementary school what they would like to change if they could change anything. Boys would be likely answering things they want world peace or a cure for cancer. While girls would answer something like no pet excrement on pavements or building a shelter for local homeless. Or in another words, women are practical while men are theoretical. Women takes care about their family and neighborhood, while men discuss politics. And that's all right because the sexes perfectly complement - the boss deals with big deals, but is incompetent when it comes to finding his misplaced keys. And here comes his secretary-hero and says: "in your left pocket", saving his day.

Another difference between a typical man and woman is that women are averagely better in talking than men because men are hunters and women stayed at home. And while men didn't have anyone to talk during the hunting, women were always accompanied by children and other women. Hence women's fitness was improving by high communication skills while men's fitness didn't really increase because they didn't have time to benefit from their good communication skills. Hence a craftsman and his saleswoman is a good combination. He makes products somewhere hidden in the cellar while she stars by communicating with clients.

Of course you can disagree by saying that your experience is different. That the most talkative person you know is a man, not a woman. But that's all right, because there is more extremes among men than among women. And averagely, men are still less talkative that women.

    Vsázka

Predikuji, že do dvaceti let Američané začnou používat šťávy. Už teď používají džusy z koncentrátů a colu z post-mixů.

Naopak by ho raději viděli kratší.

A Wikipedia by měla novou fotografii.

To zná z facebooku. A doplnění metainformací?

A tohle nerovnoměrné rozložení mne zaujalo.

A obdobně to platí u 0% hranice.

Why I Love And Hate Macbook Air

    What do I like:
    1. The antidust black rubber on the lid. It works.
    2. The LED on lid signalizing that the camera is working. When it's not turn on, the LED is almost invisible. Nice touch.
    3. The laptop is silent when not used on 100%.
    4. I love the SSD. It's small (now I would choose 256GB) but fast.
    What do I dislike:
    1. The build in camera is noisy. But it is excusable as it has to be really thin (just 1mm or so) to fit into the lid.
    2. The speakers are surprisingly loud and clear. Of course they miss depth of HiFi system as we are still talking about a laptop. But still I am impressed as you can fill whole room with music from this laptop. The only annoying problem I have with the audio on Macbook Air is that it takes 3 seconds after headphone plugging until the sound is actually redirected to the headphones. This lag is irritating on otherwise lag-less laptop.
    3. The power socket has the same size as USB. And that's bad as I sometimes plug USB cable into the power socket and then I wonder why the printer doesn't work :). But Apple solved this issue in 2012 version by making the power socket wider and thinner. Alleluia.
    4. Aluminum is cold and unpleasant to touch. But I expected that and covered the laptop with leather.
    5. No Ethernet. Hence I have to use an ugly USB pigtail.
    6. Only 4GB of RAM. But there have been some special versions with 8GB.
    7. The SD card reader is not deep enough to hide the card completely. Hence the card is sticking out from the laptop by 1 cm. And once I have cracked a card in the reader because of that. And you can't use the slot to conveniently expand the disk size.

    Chloupky

    1. Chloupky vypadají jako kužel. A když seříznete špičku, průměrná šířka chloupku se zvětší. Tedy chloupky potom vypadají tlustší.
    2. S věkem chloupky tmavnou. A když uříznete světlý konec, chloupek průměrně ztmavne.
    3. Seříznutím jsou chloupky kratší, tedy méně ohebný. Takže působí, jako by ztvrdly.
    4. Relativní rozdíl mezi 1mm a 6mm je mnohem větší, než mezi 20mm a 25mm. Takže chloupky vypadají, jako by rostli rychleji.

    Why geometry is taught

The history of Mathematics as we know it started in the 5th century BC in antic Greece, where philosophers examined geometry and postulated things like Pythagorean triangle. And for example architecture benefited from the geometry and it allowed construction of great buildings like Pantheon or Roman Colosseum.
But in the 5th century AD west Roman empire collapsed and western Europe sank in the darkness. This epoch is characterized by Romanesque art, which employs massive walls and small windows because otherwise the building would collapse.
However, in the 11th century Crusaders conquered Jerusalem and they have been amazed by the local architecture and decided to transport local "the true Gods" architecture back to home. Hence they have pillaged libraries and acquired many translations of antique books in Arabian language. The imported architecture is now called Gothics and it was possible build such elegant and high buildings only because the information from ancient Rome and Greece were recovered.
As more and more people obtained access to the ancient books a new epoch called Renaissance emerged. In translation Renaissance means reborn, reborn of antique culture. Since antique mathematics focused mostly on geometry, all new observations were proved using geometry. This promoted progress in astronomy, which studies trajectories of planets, and optics. Hence Kepler postulated hypothesis that planets follows ellipsoid trajectories and Tycho de Brahe designed a new type of telescope.
But then it looked like everything that can be easily proved using geometry was already proved and a new way how to prove things emerged independently from Newton and Leibniz in the 17th century. This new method, integrals, favored advances in mechanics and led to introduction of steam machines, combustion engines and atom energy.
Nowadays no one proves things using geometry because integrals are easier to use. However, no one likes to throw out 23 centuries of research and still geometry is easier to understand than integrals - just recall how integrals were explained - like an are under the curve...

    Why British drink unsweetened tea

British colonized half of the world. But access to clean water was in some parts of the world problematic and if a foreigner unaccustomed to local water wanted to avoid problems with a bowel, the water had to be boiled. However, boiled water can stink incredibly and taste even worse. Hence the water had to be flavored either by tea or coffee. And it happen that British colonized the part of the world which was suitable for growing of tea and not coffee.

But why British drink unsweetened tea? French food is best with wine. German Schweinebrate is best with beer. And incredibly greasy Russia food is best with vodka. Drinks complement food. And unsweetened tea complements British food. Hence I will begin from food. British food is traditionally either salty, acidic or sweet. It is because at the beginning of the medieval time the average temperature decreased by two Centigrade and British islands began to be dependent on imported of food. But what methods could be used to preserve the food during the transport in the medieval times? Basically four methods were possible: put it into salt, put it into honey, put it into vinegar or smoke it.

But British never used smoking very much since smoking is good only for preservation of meat, fish or cheese. But British are on an island and have the finest grass in the world that has been extensively used for breeding of domestic animals. Hence British never really needed to import any meat, fish or cheese and never needed to eat anything smoked. And after almost complete eradication of all British forests during the Victorian epoch for ships they even couldn't enjoy domestic smoked products.

Consequently all imported food must have been salty, acidic or sweet. But try to eat salty or acidic things all the time. I will spare you and your stomach - it is impossible. Eat too much salt and you get into a problem with osmotic pressure. Eat too much acidic food and you run into a problem with pH. Hence most British food was sweet - it was the only way how to preserve the food while preserving its edibility. And traditions are extremely strong in England. Thus British still eat over-sweetened food, they still drink tea and they still don't put any sugar into tea because all the sugar is included in the food. British are so keen to make everything sweet that even meat is caramelized to make it taste sweet. And the only way how to survive the never ending flood of sweet things is to drink bitter tea. And reversely, the only way how to survive bitter tea is to eat sweet food. Hence it is Ouroboros.

    Bootstrapping

Bootstrapping is a ridiculously overloaded word. It can have following meanings:
    1) In real life: A loop of at the top rear of a boot to help in pulling the boot on.
    2) In poesy: Accomplishing something without aid (“pull yourself up by the bootstraps”).
    3) In Computer Science: A way how to load an operating system or an application.
    4) In Mathematics: A way how to calculate confidence intervals.
    5) In Business: How to start up a company.
    6) In Finance: How to finance your company.
    7) In Behavioural Science: Application of a model of man.

    Sometimes it's confusing.

    Disadvantage of plastic windows

If I have to compare plastic and wood windows, then the advantage of plastic windows are:
    • they don't expand nor shrink, thus they don't need periodical readjustment as wooden frames
    • they don't suffer from imperfections typical for natural materials
    • it is easy to make holes into the frame for cables
    The disadvantages of plastic windows:
    • you don't see into the window frame. And sometimes the window is just a plastic frame, which is hold together with the glass. Once I have seen a plastic window which was left open for a week. And next week the glass slid out from the frame because the plastic frame couldn't hold the heavy glass for so long time. In another case the customer asked for a glassed wall and decided to make it from plastic windows. During the normal wind (30 km/h) the middle of the wall moved forward and backward by 8cm because the frame was armored just with a wire. I don't say that plastic frames are less rigid than wooden frames, that's not true. But when you decide to choose plastic frame, look at the armoring of the window - there should be massive pieces of metal, which can withstand a lot of force (nice trick - try to hang yourself on the frame, if the frame survives, you may have found a good frame).
    • you don't know how durable is the plastic. The problem is that the manufacturers attempt to save the cost and put a lot of filling material into the plastic because the filling material is much cheaper than plastic. Unfortunately the filling materials often decrease the quality of the compound. The common problem is color instability (white turns into beige or grey - just look at your old PC to get the idea), cold problems (plastic can get fragile or porous in cold) and aging instability (simply some plastic doesn't last long, for example Tesco bags are designed to last just one year and then they turn into ash).
    • while it can be good that you can easily make holes into the frame burglars abuse it as well. They make a hole into the frame, find the lever from the handle, pull the lever the right direction and the window is opened. It's easy (you just need an accumulator screwdriver, a headlamp and pliers) and fast (it can take 5 minutes for unskilled labor, 30 seconds for a professional).

Why People Believe in Global Warming

I am not going to discuss whether global warming exists or not but I would rather explain why people like to believe in existence of global warming.
    1. People like to be scared. When they are kids they like when people do "baf" on them. When they are 15 years old they like to watch horror movies with people dissected by a chainsaw. And when they are 20 they like stories about communism, terrorism and global warming.
    2. People don't like unexplainable. Back in time when there was a storm people used to say "the Gods are angry". When the summer was too dry they used to say "the Gods are angry". When the winter was too long they used to say, ... well, I think you have got it.
But in these days not everyone is religious and Bible explains only flood. And despite billions dollars spend on science weather forecasts are unreliable. Fortunately, we can explain extreme weather by global warming.
    3. People don't like when they can't control things. When the winter was too long people used to sacrifice a goat or a virgin to placate the Gods. Communists use to promise that we will rule the wind and rain. But these days it's hard to find a goat and neither science gives as tools to change the weather.
But wait. If global warming is changing the weather and if global warming is caused by humans than we have finally got control over the weather! All we have to do is lower carbide dioxide emissions and it will lower global warming!
Overall, global warming is a beautifully fabricated story worth of spreading, regardless it's fact or fiction.

    Global warming

Why people like to believe in global warming caused by emissions of carbondioxid?
Because people don't like, when they can't control things or at least explain them.

Why people like to listen to stories about global warming?
Because kids enjoy morbid fairy tails. And global warming is a blockbuster fairy tail for adults.

    Does global warming really exist?
Since Vaclav Klaus, a man who hates ecologists, accepts the existence of global warming, global warming is a reality.

Is global warming caused by people?
Global warming is nothing new. It happens all the time. The last big warming happened during the transition from ice age to what we have now. These changes of temperature are natural, periodic, bigger and faster, than what we experience nowadays. See plot of temperature in the past & presence.
